Comments

This spoon is a gilded silver version of a solid gold “Coronation” spoon by the same maker (accession no. 1971.1119).  Both spoons copy the so-called Coronation Spoon used to anoint English, and later British, sovereigns during a coronation ceremony.  That spoon predates 1349 is held in the Tower of London.  The circumstances for why these two reproductions were made at this time are not known.
