The Historic Odessa Foundation is now looking for volunteers to serve in a variety of roles.

Volunteers will have a chance to step back in time and experience this treasure trove of historic homes and buildings from the 18th century that are known as the Historic Houses of Odessa. Currently, the Historic Odessa Foundation is looking for:

School Tour Guides

Guide students as they step into the world of children living in Odessa in the 18th century.  Explore our site with students and their teachers in nine different interactive workshops each of which highlights different aspects of life in a colonial Delaware town.

Hearth Cooks

Cook over an open fire using the techniques, tools and recipes typically found in 18th c Odessa. Invite your guests to explore the culinary history of the mid- Atlantic through your cooking demonstrations and historical interpretations.

Museum Guides

Guides provide tours for the general public and groups, and schools. Guide volunteers work three or more days per month with 12-20 hours required training.

Librarians / Archives

Volunteers for this position meet most Wednesdays and are currently involved in cataloging the research files and other library materials.

Special Events

Volunteers work periodically throughout the year as room-stationed interpreters (volunteers are provided with a script), security personnel and visitor receptionists for special programs (i.e. Christmas in Odessa).

Receptionists

This position requires work several days a month greeting and ticketing visitors. The Houses are open from March through the end of December for walking tours and visitors.

Gardeners

Gardening volunteers meet on the second Tuesday morning of each month. Gardening will be starting up again on March 17th, in the garden of the Corbit-Sharp House at 9:15 a.m.

A Volunteer Event Committee schedules meetings via email or telephone. The Historic Houses of Odessa holds two major events each year. These programs honor the volunteers who have given so freely of their time and expertise. The events are also designed as cultivation programs to recruit new volunteers.
