Inscription

"Old Ironsides. / Vidit Vicit / J.P.G. / U.S.N." is engraved into the silver plaque on the cover.  The outside bottom of the case has an old inscription that is now only partially legible.  It reads in part, “Made of the / Capstan of the  / Old Constitution presented to E by his cousin Thos. For Lydia _____her to her son.” 

Condition Notes

The lid split apart along a grain line.  It was glued together c. 1973 and has partially split apart again.

Comments

The Latin phrase on the cover, Vidit Vicit, translates to "he came, he conquered."
