Lecture: "Red Where? From Wheels to Kilns to Kitchens"

Today, we call it redware but early local potters advertised it as earthenware. The red color of this relatively low-fired ceramic is the product of burning clay bodies high in iron. Typically wheel-thrown and fashioned into a variety of forms, these wares were used to store, prepare and serve foodstuffs.

Join us for an afternoon examining paint colors in Historic Odessa! This lecture/ tour by Catherine Adams Masek, will include an hour long power point presentation in the Bank building to acquaint us with the paint colors that were popular c.1700-1900, the usage of such colors in Odessa, and other neighbouring communities with the scientific approaches employed to study such finishes.

An Old English Christmas of Washington Irving

This Christmas season be delighted with the Christmas exhibit at the English-Georgian style Wilson Warner House (c. 1769) that is transformed into the storied English countryside home, Bracebridge Hall. The quaint exhibit is inspired by the story of Old Christmas from the sketchbook of the 19th century American author Washington Irving.

Red Where? A Collection of Earthenware Pottery

Discover the Historic Odessa Foundation’s collection of redware pottery on display now through mid-October in the historic Bank Building on the corner of Second and Main Streets in Odessa. These utilitarian vessels included plates, platters, bowls, jugs, jars, mugs, cake and butter molds, and even flower pots. The forms indicated that the wares were meant for everyday use.
