Comments
The spoon has a bowl that looks like a nutmeg or possibly a walnut. The foliate handle, however, represents nutmeg greenery. It is illustrated and discussed in Anton Hardt, Souvenir Spoons of America (1891), pp. 8-9. Connecticut is the nutmeg state. Hardt stated, "Hansel, Sloan & Co., Hartford, Conn., control the manufacture and sale of this spoon."
The spoon was catalogued among the collection of souvenir spoons that belonged to Mary Corbit Warner, although it is probably better understood as an Aesthetic Movement spoon than a souvenir spoon. The maker, Shiebler, made silver objects in the Aesthetic Movement style.
