Comments

Only a large fragment of this slipcast spittoon remains, but enough remains to form a mental image of its original appearance.  Most of the top section is missing, but a small section of the ornate caste shell border remains, as does much of the molded lower half.  The circle of dark brown glaze on the inside bottom near the center remains from when the undamaged spittoon was originally glazed, the glaze passing through the center hole.  A 3-inch section of the inside bottom is unglazed; it must have occurred when glaze was originally applied to the intact object, and this area was simply missed.

The spittoon has a dark brown glaze applied in such a manner as to evoke Rockingham wares, which were stylish contemporary ceramics but made of a yellow rather than red earthenware.
