Comments
The town of Mauch Chunk (Lenape language for “bear place”), founded in 1818 in the east-central part Pennsylvania, was renamed Jim Thorpe in 1954. In the 19th century, it became a large coal shipping center by canal and later by rail. The townscape portrayed in the spoon bowl shows a huge pile of coal in the center.
