Comments
This unusual souvenir spoon has “ALLEGHANY” in the bowl, written across yellow flowers with green leaves executed in cloisonné, a technique that uses thin metal walls to contain enamels (or other materials) in a desgin. Also unusual, the handle shaft is a fluted column that supports a rococo-like cartouche that forms the handle end. Similarly made spoons say “EASTER” or other, instead of a place-name. Alleghany is a county in Pennsylvania. Alleghany counties are also in Virginia and North Carolina. Allegany County, Maryland, is spelled differently.
The spoon maker is not known.
