Comments
The single saucer is part of a larger set that accompanies four small tea cups (accession nos. 2011.74.11 through 2011.74.13) and four small coffee cups (accession nos. 2011.74.6 through 2011.74.9). This saucer is slightly larger in diameter as the others, but is otherwise, the same. The difference in size may be a consequence of production and not an indication of a separate source.
All of the saucers are decorated in a rich cobalt blue and depict characteristic Nanking scenes. They show a pagoda among other Chinese buildings, a meandering waterway separating islands, a Chinese figure carrying water containers across a bridge, and other Chinese figures in boats. They have finely rendered floral band around the inside edges, which have gilded rims.
