Comments
The small coffee cup and saucer are part of a larger set that includes cups (accession nos. 2011.74.6 and 2011.74.7) and saucers. The saucers are the same as those accompanying a slightly different coffee cup (accession no. 2011.74.9) and four tea cups (accession nos. 2011.74.10 through 2011.74.13) and a single saucer (accession no. 2011.74.14). This saucer (accession nos. 2011.74.8) is decorated in a slightly lighter blue than the other saucers. It is not as finely detailed.
The matching members of the larger set have decoration painted in a rich cobalt blue and depicting a characteristic Nanking scene. The scene shows a pagoda among other Chinese buildings, a meandering waterway separating islands, a Chinese figure carrying water containers across a bridge, and other Chinese figures in boats. All of the objects within the larger set have finely rendered floral bands at the tops of the cups and saucers. Rims are gilded.
