Comments
The small coffee cup and saucer are part of a larger set that includes cups (accession nos. 2011.74.6 and 2011.74.8) and saucers. This particular cup, however, is slightly lower than the other two. The saucers are the same as those accompanying a slightly different coffee cup (accession no. 2011.74.9) and four tea cups (accession nos. 2011.74.10 through 2011.74.13) and a single saucer (accession no. 2011.74.14).
The matching members of the larger set have decoration painted in a rich cobalt blue and depicting a characteristic Nanking scene. The scene shows a pagoda among other Chinese buildings, a meandering waterway separating islands, a Chinese figure carrying water containers across a bridge, and other Chinese figures in boats. All of the objects within the larger set have finely rendered floral bands at the tops of the cups and saucers. Rims are gilded.
