The wood has several deep splits along the grain.

Comments

The rolling pin is turned from a single piece of wood, forming handles at each end, one of which has a hole drilled through it to allow it to be hung by a string.

The degree to which this rolling pin has split open is unusual, inasmuch as most turners would have used seasoned wood that was less likely to split.  The size of the splitting relates to moisture loss not to the passage of time.
