Comments
The short and squat lidded cup with an intertwined strap handle was made for custard desserts, whose names have come to identify this specific form. The lid has a molded strawberry finial. It fits within the flaring rim of the cup. The two intertwined straps of the handle join the cup body at four sites marked by strawberry or floral motifs. The dessert cup is decorated in the Canton tradition that incorporated Chinese buildings, including a prominent pagoda, islands separated by waterways on which boats sail, and mountains in the distance. The lid has a diapered band around the edge. The decoration is more precise and detailed than much Canton.
The pot de crème is one of a pair with 2011.74.5, which shares the same provenance.
