Comments
This plate, one of a pair with accession no. 2011.13, shows a scene of conventional Chinese buildings and trees on the right side separated by water from an island-like body of land with a pagoda on it. A Chinese boat is in the water, and two birds fly in the sky. A band of hexagonal cells runs around the booge (the upward-curving base of the sidewalls), and another diapered border, related to so-called Fitzhugh patterns, decorates the rim.
This plate differs from its mate in the expressions of the image, but all of the components coincide.
For other fine examples of this style, see accession nos. 2011.8 through 2011.14, all of which share the same 20th century provenance and may have been parts of the same service. Those without gilding may have had it removed if it had worn from use.
