Comments
The plate appears to be one of a pair with accession no. 2011.11, although the two plates were executed by different decorators and show variations in renderings. The image is a highly codified view of a Chinese building amide trees in the right foreground, separated from a building in the left background by a body of water with a boat. Two bids fly in the sky above. The bands around the rim and booge (the curved edge at the platter bottom), composed of a diapered lattice with detail below and a hexagonal cell band, also decorate Chinese porcelains of the same date in Fitzhugh patterns. Diapered bands around the rim and booge are enlivened by gilding.
For other fine examples of this style, see accession nos. 2011.8 through 2011.14, all of which share the same 20th century provenance and may have been parts of the same service. Those without gilding may have had it removed if it had worn from use.
