Comments
The white ceramic plate, decorated in blue and yellow with black and red, has a knight mounted on a steed in the center with the German inscription “IN TREUE / FEST.” Roughly translated, it means “in loyalty firm” or steadfast and true. The phrase was used by German monarchists at the beginning of the 20th century and after the start of World War I.
The presence of a label on the back written in the manner of many other labels indicates that this plate was owned by Mrs. E. Tatnall (Mary Corbit) Warner. How she acquired it is unknown, although it suggests she may have sympathized to a certain extent with early 20th century German ideals.
