Comments
The small plate is decorated in a conventional Canton with a pagoda and another Chinese building in the center, mountains in the distance and landscape in the foreground, all contained by a banded rim. The plate is marked on the outside bottom with the country of origin in response to United States laws governing the importation of goods, an on-going legislative process that began with the Tariff Act of 1890. The misspacing of the country of origin label on this plate shows that the decorator was merely copying required wording without knowledge of what it said. The late timeframe of this plate establishes how long inexpensive Canton porcelains were being produced for the United States market.
