Comments

The transfer-printed plate shows a French mill with three people picnicking in the foreground, separated by a river flowing through arches in the building.  The rim bordering the composition has a grape vine and clusters at the top and flowers along the bottom.

The plate bears the impressed mark “WOOD” along with a printed banner identifying the image as a French view. Enoch Wood (1759-1840), a well-regarded Staffordshire potter, established a company with his three sons, which remained operational until after his death.  The pottery specialized in American, English, and European views and sold considerable quantities to the American market.
