Provenance

The andirons descended in the Corbit family to the donor, Harriet Hurd Curtis (1903–1971).  She was a daughter of Frederick W. Curtis and Sara Clark Corbit (1871–1952); Sara was a great grand-daughter of William Corbit, the house builder.  The andirons may have come into family ownership in any one of several marriages.

Comments

The cast iron andirons have front section composed of tiers of C scrolls.  Brass ball tops are cast in halves and soldered together, a manufacturing process begun in the 18th century.  The balls are peened in place, again suggestive of earlier times.  The horizontal billet bar was cast with an integral rear leg.
