Comments
This simple lathe-turned bowl is painted inside and out in black, red, and gold, although the gold appears to have oxidized and darkened. The painted motifs are simple swirls and stylized floral motifs that ring the body.
The decorative style of this bowl is often associated with Khokhloma painting, named for a region in Russia, but this bowl lacks the kinds of small flowers, berries, and leaf motifs that are typical of Khokhloma. Bowls similar to this one have geographical origins in several Scandinavian and other Northern European countries.
