Provenance
The jug was purchased on October 30, 1982, at a Harry Rudnick & Sons auction for Margaret B. Davis of Odessa. Ex coll. Mr. and Mrs. Harrison V. Davis. The 1982 accession record states that the jug was “probably used between 1900 and 1930 when Harrison V. Davis and his father, Frank Davis, operated the Davis General Store,” built c. 1828 on Main Street in Odessa.
Comments
The cylindrical jug, with rounded shoulders and an applied handle, has a particularly thick lip. The base of the handle lacks any kind of thumbprint where the potter pressed the applied clay into the body. Two small areas on the outside of the jug lack glaze, probably where this jug touched another vessel in the kiln.
The absence of telling physical evidence makes identification of where and when this jug was made problematic. Its Odessa-area provenance is helpful in that regard.
