Comments

The shallow, oval basket was used for gathering foodstuffs, whether fruits, vegetables, or other. The woven hickory splints have a substantial, rounded hickory hoop around the rim; a second piece forms a spine along the bottom length of the basket.  These structural strips are secured in part by wire nails, which help date this basket.  Openings at opposite sides at the rim and across the short axis provide convenient handholds.
