One end of the bowl is slightly higher than the other, suggesting that the stem of the foot is slightly compressed on the low side.

Comments

The oval bowl has angular strap handles at each end.  The upper half of the handles is molded and marked by a spur on the outside.  The lower half is plain and tapered to where it joins the body.  The body has four shallow projecting panels and gadrooning applied around the outside of the rim.  The bowl stands on an oval domed foot or base shaped to echo the projecting panels of the body.  The body and foot are of the same design as those in accession no. 1972.112, but the handles and gadrooning detail are different.

The bowl has no particular function.  It may have been acquired to serve as a slop bowl, perhaps to the coffee service (accession no. 1972.108-.110) that was expanded in the 1880s by the teapot, spoon vase, and butter dish (accession no. 1972.112).
