Comments
The fireplace shovel and accompanying tongs embody functionality with decoration. The shafts of each tool have swellings in the center, which occurs relatively often, but the handles are particularly well modeled. The cylindrical grips have two beads or rings that aid grasping them securely. The ends of the brass sleeves are modeled into an urn with beading around the top and surmounted by a finial. Both sleeves are cast in halves, fit against a swelled section of the shaft, and are peened in place at the tip.
