Comments
The widely splayed shovel has an integral tab at the top that fits over the flattened end of the handle shaft and is riveted in place. At the opposite end of the handle, an ovoid ball forms the end of a brass sleeve, peened in place at the very tip. The shape of the handle and sleeve is similar to other marked by Richard Whittingham of New York, which suggests a possible place of origin.
