Comments
The rectangular leather pouch with a double flap is slotted in the rear to be attached to a leather belt. The flaps open to two sheet metal liners that fit inside. Each is divided into a large and a small compartment. A brass oval medallion with "U S" cast into the face is attached to the outer flap. The belt has holes in each end: one end accommodates a pair of arrow-shaped prongs and the other a single prong. For an image of the appropriate prongs, see the back of the Union belt buckle, accession no. 2013.9.
Possible manufacture by Longley & Co. derives from favorable comparisons to similar objects attributed to them. However, contracted military equipment may have been made by any of several manufacturers operating in the Northeast.
