Condition Notes
The handle to raise and lower the candle ejector of candlestick 1969.269.1 has broken off, and the ejector base is now loose inside the stick. The once round base has shrunk to an oval. It has a split in one side and is likely a later replacement.
Comments
These two similar candlesticks are made of iron coiled around to form an open spiral that forms a candle socket. The height of the burning candle can be adjusted by raising or lowering a sliding ejector, visible on 1969.269.2. The tab on .1 has broken off, leaving the ejector base loose. A tang or extension at the base of the coiled candle socket allows it to be mounted onto a turned wood base. At the top, another tab or finger grip forms a convenient means for the user to move the candlestick.
Several collectors and dealers associate this candlestick form of candlestick with France, but more specific historical evidence is needed. The form was likely made broadly.
For another candlestick similar to these, see accession no. 1968.898.
