Condition Notes

Candlestick 1977.516.1 has a hole in the bobeche.  The base is bent downward resulting in a deep fold in the metal.  Candlestick 1977.516.2 is bent.  The bobeche has tears and losses.  The base has tears, one of which has been repaired.

Comments

The pair of candlesticks bobeches attached to nearly cylindrical candle sockets above a baluster-like stem and a ringed foot on an octagonal base.  The two sticks vary slightly from each other, which is often a normal consequence of the further finishing required after the pewter is removed from its mold.  There is no evidence of skimming marks, which is part of that clean-up process.

The candlesticks are of uncertain geographical origin and time.  It is possible that they were recast from other candlesticks.  Their origin may be Europe.
