Comments
This pair of candlesticks, which has push-up ejectors, has several features indicating manufacture in the second half of the 19th century and later. The base is rectangular, rather than square. The large faceted ring near the top is combined with a conical shape of rings (an inverted “beehive”). The casting is thin without any indication of skimming or other cleaning of the rough surface inside the bases to remove excesses. The shafts were not cast in halves.
The individual candlesticks in this pair vary from each other—almost enough to suggest calling them a “near pair.” The diameters of the drip pans at the top are visibly different, and close comparisons of the moldings and other shapes reveal slight differences. One stick is slightly taller than the other, but that may be attributable to the solder repair near the bottom, which may have added metal increasing the height. Rates of cooling after casting may also have contributed to size differences.
