Comments
The cylindrical candle socket at the top of the shaft has a double mid-rib and a scalloped bobeche (to catch candle drippings). It stands on a flared "trumpet" turning above a thick ring. The scalloped base links the design of this pair of candlesticks to another variation, also made in Birmingham at about the same time (see accession no. 1959.3549). This pair (i.e., 1959.4055) has a more elaborately shaped base with cusps or points between the scallops. Those points continue the edges of an octagonal dome in the base.
The pair has push-up ejectors to remove candle stubs from the candle sockets. No evidence indicates that the shafts of this pair of candlesticks were cast in halves. Skimming marks are on the undersides of the domed bases. Skimming cleaned off excess brass from castings for later use.
