Comments

The pair of candlesticks takes the form of a classical column on a square, coved pedestal base with courses of beads near the top and bottom.  The columnar shaft has stop-fluting in the lower half.  A wide bobeche at the top catches candle drippings.

The design of this pair of candlesticks follows one in a group of 24 engraved pages forming an anonymous English brass-founder's catalogue or pattern book of candlesticks.  No identification accompanies the plates, but several have 1797 watermarks dating the paper.  The plates were published privately as Brass Candlesticks by English brass dealer Rupert Gentle in 1973.  A detail from plate 7 is attached.
