Comments
This pair of candlesticks represents a fine example of Asian manufacture for the Western market. The sticks are made of paktong, an alloy made predominantly of copper with zinc and tin. Although London and French uses of paktong are known, China was the leading source. The alloy resembles silver and tarnishes slowly.
The candlesticks exhibit stylish London examples in several respects. The six-lobed base is finely detailed. The stem has the usual flared element below the candle socket and above a smaller flared element. Rings separating the larger design elements and vertical creases add definition and interest. The candle socket itself pinches inward and has a multiple ringed rim, all of which makes these candlesticks stand out.
No seams are visible indicating the candle shafts were cast in halves, as was the usual Western practice at this time.
