Comments
The candlestick is formed by an iron strap coiled around to create an open spiral into which a candle can be fitted. The coiled iron at the top ends in a spike that serves as a handle of sorts. Another spike or sharpened tang at the other end allows the stick to be attached securely to the turned wood base. The open coil allows a candle ejector to be raised and lowered by positioning the tab with a center hole.
The candlestick is painted red, which has worn off and delaminated on much of the surface. A yellow stripe runs in the center of the coiled iron.
For two other candlesticks similar to this one, see accession no. 1969.269.
