Comments
The candlestick conforms in general to styles of the 1750s and later, but this example lacks the clear definition so typical of Birmingham work, which set the standard. In addition, the candle socket lacks a mid-rib, and the drip pan simply angles upward with no further shaping. The shaft stands on a multiple-stepped square base, which represents another departure from Birmingham work. The shaft was cast in halves.
England had a highly developed brass industry in the 18th century and is the logical place of origin for this candlestick, although further research may reveal other places of manufacture in Europe or perhaps the United States.
