Comments

The columnar candlestick is made in three parts:  the column is cast as a hollow cylinder with shallow reels at each end.  It is soldered sloppily (appearing similar to a repair) to the top of the lower section, which includes the flared cone set above the square base, also cast as a unit.  The third part is the removable bobeche.  It is a cup with slightly oblique angles that is soldered to a wide rim made from a sheet of pewter.

The candlestick was originally one of a pair.  The second candlestick, accession no. 1959.4032, was deaccessioned by Winterthur and sold at New England Auctions, August, 14, 1995, lot 933.
