Comments

This rectangular box with a domed, hinged lid is painted a rich red.  It has rolled edges at the top and bottom of the lid and the top and bottom of the body.  The box has no interior fittings, nor does a lock for the lid secure it.

The red color likely evoked Chinese lacquered wares among potential buyers.  Such wares were among those advertised as "japanned wares."
