Comments

The spoon has a twisted cylindrical handle surmounted by an ornate plinth with a she-wolf and the suckling twins Romulus and Remus, founders of Rome.  This sculpture reproduces a 5th century BCE bronze sculpture in Rome known as the Capitoline Wolf.

“SPQR” and “ROMA” are on the front and back of the spoon below the wolf.  SPQR stands for “Senatus Populus Que Romanus” ("The Senate and the Roman People").

For another souvenir spoon with similar themes, see accession no. 1971.1105.
