ARTISAN CRAFT WORKSHOP SERIES: Basket Weaving
Immerse yourself in a monthly American craft workshop series where participants will create an artform using traditional materials and methods taught by experts in each craft to include baskets, bandboxes, hooked rugs, marbleized paper, and floorcloths. Take home a wonderful hand crafted keepsake.
Participants of the Basket Weaving workshop will learn the art of basket weaving using natural rattan reed. Participants will be instructed on various beginner level basket weaving techniques including laying out a base, twining, over/under weaving and lashing rims. The focus will be on completing a traditional Market Basket (6” w x 9” l x 4 1/2 “h) during the workshop.
The artisan Nancy Brady Miller grew up in Wilmington, DE and moved to North Carolina to accompany her husband while he was stationed at MCAS Cherry Point. During this time, Nancy learned the art of basket weaving. She has been weaving for 31 years and has taught classes in Delaware, Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania. She is excited to share her love of basket weaving during the workshop at the Historic Odessa Foundation.
Cost is $60 which includes the handle and reed for the basket. The instructor has tools which the students can borrow. Participants are asked to bring a towel to the workshop as each will be working with damp reed.
