Clockmaker Duncan Beard and cabinetmaker John Janvier, consummate artisans who lived within a few miles of each other in Odessa, combined to make this tall clock. Although the case is unmarked, it bears many signature features of Janvier’s fully developed and distinctive work. Unique is not a word to be used lightly, but Janvier’s scalloped waist door qualifies. It visually unites the complex, architectonic bonnet with the differently scalloped base panel, along with bonnet colonnettes and engaged quarter columns at the corners of the lower sections. The pediment represents another particular Janvier design, which combines blind fretwork with webbing and a distinctive carved central plinth that once supported three leafy sprigs.
