Petite Exhibit: Candle Mould

Discover an amazing candle mould, which has been selected from the nearly seven thousand objects from within the HOF museum collection and has been showcased at the National Historic Register Wilson Warner House.  

Most people picture the stereotypical early 19th century person next to the hearth making candles using the lengthy process of dipping cotton wicks into hot wax, while never imagining that there was a faster and easier method of moulding candles in pewter tubes, sometimes ceramic, housed within a large wooden frame.  Take the opportunity to view this unique object up close and with supporting information and illustrations.

On your fast track to the beach, slow down, and stop by the beautiful village of Odessa to experience the history while studying this educational petite exhibit.  The candle mould was created by an A. Brower of New York, so marked on the dozen and one-half pewter tapered tubes.  Fortunately, the craftsman stamped his work, but unfortunately, not much else can be learned about the life of the elusive pewterer A. Brower.  His advertisement is unavailable but a substitute one from nearby Philadelphia exists to illustrate his craft.
